We were one of the first five charter schools that were authorized by the Chancellor of the New York City
Department of Education in May 2000. Since that time we were chosen as the site for Mayor Bloomberg’s
press conference on the NYC Charter School Initiative, October 30, 2003, as an exemplary “charter school
that works.” In March 2004 we were commended by the United Nations Under-Secretary Anwarul K.
Chowdury for the facilitation of Renaissance students and staff at the “Building a Culture of Peace for the
Children of the World” Exhibition. We received a Special Citation from the 2005 Blackboard Awards for
Excellence in Education. Finally, our charter renewed by the New York State Education Department for 5
years in 2005.
